A Change of Pace

So after many resumes and interviews, and A LOT of stress, I finally got a new job!Things at the Teen Center have been so awful. With my supervisor going on maternity leave earlier this year, and an interim supervisor in her place, rules have been inconsistent and frustrations high. Once the real supervisor came back, the two began working together causing many new changes. Each woman has a different way of doing things and a different tolerance when things don't go her way. In addition, with all of the changes in policies of our company, it seemed that everyday we came in, we were getting in trouble for something different or being asked to perform another task. We were all feeling like nothing we were doing was good enough. And, when crises came up, the supervisors made them into much bigger deals than necessary and treated us as if we were incompetent. I wanted to walk out so many times, but had to remain calm and mature, holding my frustrations to make the wiser decision. I couldn't quit my job with no idea when something else would come up. So, I continued to apply at various places.I had 2 interviews in one day. one at Hamlin Middle School and one at Sacred Heart hospital. The two were extremely different positions. The middle school position ended up being a detention room monitor- very different than how it was advertised, but I was willing to give it a shot. I figured that it was perhaps a ministry opportunity to work with troubled kids, and that my extensive experience with middle schoolers would serve me well. The interview went great, but I left feeling that I was way over-qualified. Yet, I felt that it might give me a foot into the door and lead to better positions in the school. The other interview was as a secretary in the food department at the hospital. While this position is NOTHING at all what I was looking for, it was offered to me by a friend of mine from church. He is transferring to the new hospital and I would be taking his position at the old hospital. The pay is quadruple what I make now and the medical benefits are fantastic. There were 90 applications for the job, 6 people selected for interviews, and I was the only person to pass both tests that were given to me. I left the interview very unsure of how things went, but my friend called me that night and told me the job was mine, pending an official phone call. At the same time, I got a call from the vice principal at the middle school saying that I did not get the job, but was the top contender and he STRONGLY encouraged me to not only keep applying but to specifically apply for a job at his school because he'd love to work with me. That's a huge compliment from someone who interviews you. And I was left totally torn between the two positions. A job in the middle school is everything that I'm passionate about, but I feared I'd be passing up a great opportunity. The hospital job is nothing I was looking for, but would benefit Jesse and me immensely. I cried a lot and prayed a lot, and in the end, decided that I could always come back to a position in the middle school in the future, and shouldn't pass up the great opportunity offered to me.So, last week, I put in my two week notice at the Teen Center, had 6 shots in my arms as an update for my immunizations to work at the hospital, and began my new employee orientation. Tomorrow I start training in the mornings at the hospital while working my last week at the Teen Center in the afternoons. And by next Monday, I will be working my first full-time job ever (aside from the times I worked 2 part time jobs together).Jesse is uber excited. He's making a list of all of the ways he wants to spend my new income. He initially picked me up and spun me all around the room upon finding out that I was hired. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all pans out and will keep you posted. :-)
